British fashion designer Paul Smith became the artistic director of an exhibition at the National Picasso Museum in Paris dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death. It has been reported www.
The designer chose an unusual concept for hanging the paintings – instead of white walls, the master’s work is surrounded by striped walls, referencing old wallpapers, collages and Paul Smith’s signature striped print.
As Paul Smith himself admitted, he asked himself how he would appreciate Pablo Picasso’s ideas.
“Does he think it is a very modern way of showing his work? I hope so,” he told WWD.
According to him, the organizers of the exhibition chose him as the artistic director because they hoped that he would create an exhibition space that would be interesting to social media users and would be interesting to take photos.
“They wanted to make people think in a new light. I’m not an art historian, I’m not very knowledgeable in Picasso’s work. It was about making the exhibition a visually oriented part of the modern world because everyone has a phone and everyone is constantly filming. So it’s a very visual display,” said Paul Smith.
