At the beginning of March 2023, films and series of the Walt Disney Company will be removed from the libraries of Russian video services. The reason is simple – the contract for the licensed reproduction of Disney, Pixar and Lucasfilm projects has expired. They cannot be extended due to sanctions.
Among the projects not available for viewing, we note most of the Star Wars saga, the films of the Home Alone series, the cartoons Zootopia (Zootopia), Frozen (Frozen), Soul (Soul) and a number of other projects.
Last year, Disney Studio informed Russian services that it would not renew licenses for showing children’s content. There are also no plans to sign new contracts.
It is true that Russia is considering the possibility of allowing domestic online cinemas to distribute films and series without the permission of the copyright holders, albeit with payment of a certain fee to them, but so far this is only an initiative, not a law. Admittedly, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Culture do not agree with this idea, but everything can change. Sorry about the cat of course
