Rodrigo Sorogoyen (Madrid, 1981), won goya For Best Directing for ‘As bestas’, his sixth feature film. Sorogoyen was competing for this Goya with Carla Simón, who was nominated for ‘Alcarrás’; Pilar Palomero for ‘La maternal’, Carlos Vermut for ‘Mantícora’ and Alberto Rodríguez for ‘Modelo 77’.
The director emphasized “movies” were shot this yearand each of his rivals was “incredible”. “We have to continue to put all that love into it to get the public to come to the theaters and see if we can make it happen,” he stressed.
The director also recalled the setting in which ‘As bestas’ was filmed and asked that the construction of four wind farms be reconsidered, which he said would harm the fauna and flora of Sabucedo (Pontevedra).
This second time winner of this award; the first was for the political thriller ‘El reino’ (2018), for which he won the Goya award for best original screenplay with Isabel Peña; The film received seven figurines. Sorogoyen becomes favorite with ‘As bestas’ to this edition with 17 nominations. A rural thriller filmed in Galicia that tackles topics such as xenophobia, the use of violence or the dark side of renewable energy.
Sorogoyen began by co-directing the romantic comedy ‘8 Dates’ (2008) with Peris Romano, but became more known for her next film ‘Stockholm’ (2013), which received three Goya nominations. His career has since been bright and he was nominated again for the detective thriller ‘Que Dios nos perdone’ (2016), ‘El reino’ and the short film ‘Madre’ (2017). It was nominated for an Oscar and received its extension as a feature film two years later. He also directed and co-wrote TV series like ‘Riot Control’ with Peña and is currently producing a new series dedicated to the Spanish Civil War.
