Chest pain, which is often confused with intercostal neuralgia, can be caused by musculoskeletal thoracalgia. This disease is considered a common cause of anterior chest pain, Anna Garmanova, a neurologist and cephalologist at Fomina Clinic, a federal network of multidisciplinary medical centers, told socialbites.ca.
“Muskeletal thoracalgia is one of the most common causes of anterior chest pain. It is associated with both muscle (myofascial) syndrome and involvement of bone and cartilage structures. Previously, this condition was often mistakenly interpreted as intercostal neuralgia, ”said Anna Garmanova.
According to the doctor, pain in this disease appears after a strange movement on the background of coughing, a long stay in an uncomfortable position. It intensifies with a deep breath and movement.
“When examined by a doctor, that is, by palpating certain structures of the chest (painful areas), the pain that the patient usually experiences is reproduced,” the neurologist added.
The doctor urged not to ignore chest pains and to see a doctor in time. He explained that the discomfort is not only the result of damage to the sternum and cartilage structures and myofascial syndrome, but can also be a symptom of diseases of the internal organs, spine or peripheral nervous system.
Chest pain may also have a psychogenic origin.
“It is necessary to exclude diseases of the cardiovascular system, lungs and gastrointestinal tract, the diagnosis of which is possible only with a comprehensive examination,” said Anna Garmanova.
