Ever since starring in the adaptation of Frank Miller’s barbarian comic ‘300’ in 2006, Gerard Butler has been a whimsical action hero with little to do with Jason Stathan, Van Damme and other adrenaline-pumping cinematic icons. Through Guy Ritchie’s hand – ‘RocknRolla’ – or the series in which he plays a presidential bodyguard – ‘Objective: the White House’, ‘Objective London’ and ‘Objective Washington DC’ – Butler is soon trying to be more. Violence is taking over and he has to take it too. This is the ‘Pilot’ state. In principle, he is a commercial flight pilot. But a stormy New Year’s Eve in the sky and a forced landing on a separatist militia-dominated Philippine island turns him into a man who shoots straight and fights hand to hand like the most skilled of mercenaries.
