At the end of October, Henry Cavill announced his return to the role of Superman. The actor once again donned the red and blue leotard in Black Adam, assuring fans that more surprises are in store for fans in the future. Looks like he promised too much.

DC Films co-CEO James Gunn officially confirmed today that Henry Cavill will no longer play Superman. A new film is already in development, but it will be a story about Clark Kent’s early years. According to Gunn, this isn’t a story about becoming a hero in the mind of the first Spider-Man.

We have Superman in our plans. In the early stages, our story will focus on the early part of Superman’s life, so the character won’t be played by Henry Cavill.

But we had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans of his. We discussed some exciting opportunities for collaboration in the future.

—James Gunn

James Gunn will write the screenplay for the film himself, but has yet to choose a director. He also noted that one of the future projects could be filmed by Ben Affleck. The enthusiast made a Christmas tree toy in the shape of a retro computer and launched *drumroll* Doom
