It is not recommended to wear high-heeled shoes in winter because of the risk of stumbling or twisting your foot on a slippery road. Therefore, the maximum heel height should be 4 cm. This was told socialbites.ca by Alisher Zokhirov, an orthopedic traumatologist at the SM-Clinic medical center.

“When the foot is raised, the heel can act as a lever, so that the foot rotates even more. And this is already fraught with muscle strains and serious dislocations. Walking in shoes with heels higher than 4 cm is generally not recommended, and it is especially dangerous in winter, ”Zohirov explained.

The trauma specialist warned that if you twisted your leg on a slippery road, you could suffer a serious injury that would require the patient to have surgery.

“Fractures and torn ligaments often require surgery. For the treatment of fractures, plates, screws are placed on the bone, sometimes external fixation devices are used. And when ligaments are torn, surgeons use a special suture material, or so-called anchor fixation, to restore them – this already requires special equipment, ”said the author.

Wearing flat shoes alone will not help prevent such injuries – the shoes should also fix the lower leg, so sneakers and low shoes should not be worn in winter either.
