Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s son, Archie, was seriously injured when a fire broke out in his nursery during the Dukes of Sussex South Africa tour in 2019. Meghan Markle spoke to Serena Williams about this in the first episode of the Archetypes podcast. According to Megan, they were very lucky at the time of the fire that their nanny, Lauren, took to feed Archie, who was only 4 months old at the time.
The Duchess said the fire in the nursery was caused by a “suddenly ignited” heater. And since there was no smoke detector in the room, someone in the house “accidentally smelled smoke in the hallway” and put out the flames.
“She must have been lying there. I was shocked and sobbing all day,” she shared with Markle Williams.
The Duchess added that despite the stress of what happened, the Sussexes went to an important meeting soon after the incident and left Archie at another house with the nanny. Serena Williams said she “wouldn’t have done” what Meghan and Harry did if this had happened to her daughter Olympia.
