It’s not the end of the world: What to do in Yamal in winter and summer What to see in Yamal in 2025 01/11/2025, 15:25

Surprisingly, Yamal is primarily an all-season destination. You can go here in winter, summer and autumn. Traveler and blogger says, “Yamal is a unique region where the change of seasons opens the doors to completely different worlds.” “His Place in the World” Konstantin Parfenyev.

winter in plague

This winter, routes have been prepared for tourists in the region, which will allow them to get acquainted with the life of the indigenous peoples of the North, and Nenets, Khanty and Selkups live in Yamal. Guests of Yamal are invited to visit the reindeer herders’ camp, ride a reindeer sleigh and meet Yamal’s Father Frost – Yamal Iri, who is hosted in Gornoknyazevsk, an ethnic village not far from Salekhard.

“Winter is about ethnography, immersion in the life of the indigenous peoples of the North,” blogger Elena Liseykina, author of the Telegram channel, said in a conversation with socialbites.ca. “Liseikina about travel, photography and in general”. According to him, it makes sense to get acquainted with the lifestyle of nomads in the cold season, and the degree of familiarity can be determined yourself.

Travelers recommend getting to know the life of the indigenous small peoples of the North by visiting the professional holiday of tundra inhabitants. “First of all, I recommend you come in winter for Reindeer Shepherd’s Day,” said Konstantin Parfenyev. Elena Liseykina agrees with him. “Reindeer Herders Day is held in February-March, and this is probably the easiest and most accessible way to get to know indigenous peoples other than visiting a museum,” he said.

According to the blogger, another affordable option is to visit one of the tents that the Khanty and Nenets keep for tourists.

“This is not a place where they live permanently, but they don’t wander around. Their parents and grandparents really roamed the tundra, maybe they still have such relatives, but these people live near a city or village and try to show their way of life to tourists. You can go to such places for a few hours for some kind of ethnographic program or arrange an overnight stay,” explained Elena Liseykina.

He added that there is also the “coolest and most original” option to immerse yourself in the life of reindeer herders: living with a real plague family in this profession. But here you need to be prepared for daily inconveniences.

“This is definitely not a tourist story: you will sleep on boards, eat the simplest meal cooked on the stove, maybe even eat raw meat. You will need to go to the toilet as there is no equipment in the tent. Hug the dogs to sleep: otherwise it is cold, because the tent is heated only by a stove, of course no one burns it at night, the owners sleep. But this is a great opportunity to really immerse yourself in everyday life and learn how people live,” said the blogger.

This inconvenience will be compensated not only by the fact that you get an unusual experience, but also by the beauty of the snowy tundra. “Hard frosts that can reach minus 50 degrees and below show the harsh but fascinating nature of the region. I was especially impressed by the slow sunsets, against the background of which herds of deer literally breathed golden vapor,” Konstantin Parfenyev admitted.

By the way, it is not possible to go to Yamal in winter just for the sake of deer – at this time of year you have a chance to meet musk oxen living in the Kordon Morozova nursery in the Ingilor Nature Park. For more than 20 years. Older animals living in pens during the summer do not approach the fences surrounding their territory. However, they come to eat on the hay harvested in winter.

Ingilor Park was established in 2022 on the site of the Polar-Ural Park – later the area of \u200b\u200bthe protected area was increased to 921 thousand hectares, it stretches from the Sob River to the Baydarata River. You need permission to move here, but this is usually not difficult.

Summer and autumn in the tundra

Summer in the tundra means endless sun, clear rivers and lakes to drink from, and fresh air. In short, it is the best time to get to know the nature of the Polar Urals. “In summer, Yamal is surrounded by greenery, despite its northern nature. There is a short but bright season from June to August. For lovers of summer activities, this is an ideal time for traveling, fishing, hiking to the emerald waterfall, the Rai-Iz massif or the Romantik glacier. You can enjoy long white nights, and sometimes the sun never sets beyond the horizon,” said Konstantin Parfenyev.

According to Elena Liseykina, the Romantikov glacier is one of the most easily accessible places in the Polar Urals: a journey from Salekhard will take a day. This glacier in the mountainous terrain of the Rai-Iz massif was formed about 1000 years ago and is located 800 meters above sea level. It was discovered in 1961 by glaciologist Leonid Troitsky.

For more remote destinations, the Romantics’ Glacier – but here again you’ll need to prepare for minor challenges (and spectacular views). “To see something beautiful, you will have to go somewhere very far in off-road vehicles and trekking vehicles, because all the beautiful places are located at a sufficient distance from the city and there are actually not many roads. ” explained Elena Liseykina.

Indeed, trekols (all-terrain vehicles with ultra-low-pressure tires, whose name means “ecological transport”) are the only type of transport suitable for traveling in the tundra. They are simply necessary – and there is no other word for it – to get to the picturesque Yangana-Pe tract in the Ingilor Natural Park. The main attraction in the Yangana-Pe mountain range is thought to be the karst lake Num-Khayal, sacred to the Nenets. The water it contains is so pure that you must take it with you in a bottle. The depth of the lake is still not fully known. It is thought to be about 35 meters.

Yangana-Pe massif is a fascinating place with the beauty and wisdom of ancient mountains. It is very old – in fact, it is a reef of the Devonian Sea, which splashed here 400 million years ago. When you stand on the ridge you feel very small and at the same time very important. Here you are – on the same level with these round white rocks, with low-growing bushes and mosses, with scanty larches, with berries, with wild animal bones, with a lost lame deer, with the wind, with the low sky and with the golden glare of the sun reflected on the neighboring peak.

Elena Liseikina believes that another pearl of Yamal is Lake Khadatayoganlor. Like the Yangana-Pe mountain range, you need to go there for several days – the journey is also long. “They usually go there by trekking and spend the night or take boats,” the blogger explained.

But the Rai-Izsky massif with the Jade Valley may turn out to be a one-day trip – it is about 100 km from Salekhard. But you will also need to travel by off-road vehicle. It is not for nothing that the valley takes its name from a semi-precious mineral; There are green stones at every step. True, it is almost impossible to find jade – in the 1970s, employees of the Soyuzkvartssamotsvety organization mined almost 20 tons of this green stone from here. Many travelers walk on serpentinite, which is also green. But you need to go to the Jade Valley not for the gems, but for the extraordinary harsh landscapes, low larches, mountains covered with moss and lichens. Blueberries and blueberries, refreshing cold waters of the Sob River and piercing air. And also – beautiful, changeable weather and cold wind.

When and how is the best time to go to Yamal?

If winter is very harsh in Yamal, August and September are ideal months for sightseeing. “In my opinion, the best time to visit Yamal is autumn, August-September. Because there are not many mosquitoes and sandflies, but at the same time it is warm enough. Besides, the tundra is painted in bright autumn colors, it is very beautiful,” said Elena Liseykina.

This year, the socialbites.ca correspondent was able to see how picturesque the tundra is in September – in fact, at the beginning of September, scarlet and ocher coexist here with the emerald green of larches, the abundance of blueberries and blueberries quickly ceases to amaze. And if you take a warm jacket and waterproof socks with you, it’s not even cold.

“Although Yamal is organized for touristic trips, it is a very difficult and complex region. You need to be prepared for the fact that the weather can get bad, equipment can break down, there are many places where there is no connection – if you leave the city, there is a 90% chance there will be no connection until you return. city. Therefore, even if you go on an organized trip, be sure to think about ways to survive yourself,” warned Elena Liseykina.

The blogger noted that in Yamal you need repellents in summer, and in winter “everything that will help you not freeze.” Fortunately, self-heating thermal underwear for hands and feet is on sale. A trip to Yamal can be an adventure you will remember for the rest of your life. Or maybe you’ll want to repeat it.

The trip was organized by the Polar Ural Autonomous Non-Profit Organization as part of the Tutu Media Intelligence project.

What are you thinking?

This year, among the dynamically developing tourist destinations, there was a place that, it seems, only lovers of extreme recreation could think about. And cold – after all, we are talking about the Yamal Peninsula. This winter alone, 65 thousand guests are expected to arrive, and the annual increase in tourist flow is 10 percent. This is a region where the average temperature in winter is minus 25 degrees, and in summer clouds of sandflies fly and eat unprotected parts of the body. socialbites.ca tells what attracts Yamal and why it is worth visiting this place.
