Recently, popular Japanese game designer Hideo Kojima shared his impressions of watching the movie “Joker: Madness for Two,” which was released this fall.
I’ve seen Joker: Madness for Two. The beginning of the film is an animated sequence reminiscent of Looney Tunes that tells the story of the Joker and his shadow. In what follows, the issue of his multiple personality disorder is discussed from beginning to end. Is the Joker Arthur? Is the Joker another person (his shadow)? Who is Arthur? This revelation ultimately ends up in a meta-perspective. Did the Joker in the previous film really captivate audiences around the world? Or was it Arthur? This question is continually asked of Lee and even the citizens of Gotham in the film.
We live in an age of mass production of heroes of ‘poetic justice’, the battle between good and evil. There have been a lot of villain-centric spin-offs lately. Can villains be superheroes? As a DC movie brought to the big screen, does this question seem too avant-garde? Is the Joker loved by audiences around the world? Or was it Arthur? Here the opinions of critics differ. Over the next ten to twenty years, the reputation of cinema will likely change with the influx of new hero films. It may take some time before it becomes a real ‘madness for two’. But there is no doubt that all viewers loved Joaquin and Gaga in this film.
As Hideo Kojima’s review shows, in his opinion, the film has not yet been understood by the majority of viewers, and 10-20 years will pass before it can become a real cult work.
