Traumatologist, dental therapist Olga Tishkina, owner of the New Iceberg dental clinic, told socialbites.ca what to do if a child breaks a molar tooth.
Tishkina said it was important to quickly find the fallen tooth and return it to its nest.
“If the tooth is significantly dirty, the victim can lick it before reattaching it. If this is done within 5 minutes after the injury, the dental nerve can remain alive. But if the tooth is in the ground and the victim does not have a tetanus shot, it is necessary either to abandon the so-called replantation or to administer an anti-tetanus serum,” the traumatologist explained.
The doctor explained that the most important thing in such injuries is not to waste time and go to the dentist as soon as possible. Tishkina reminded that in such cases you can always contact the 24-hour free helpline and get instructions and support.
According to the traumatologist, the tooth will take root only if the cells on the root surface remain alive.
“If you dry the tooth, wipe it with an alcohol wipe and rinse it with water, the connective cells will not heal. If the tooth is placed in milk or saline, the cells can survive for another 20 minutes outside the socket. Therefore, if the tooth cannot be placed, place it in cold milk and consult a dentist immediately,” the doctor explained.
