What is hiccup and how does it occur? Folk methods and improvised remedies against hiccups. How to get rid of hickey using pharmaceutical products.

What are hickeys and what do they look like?

Hickey is the popular name for a bruise or hematoma that occurs as a result of strong pressure on the skin during a kiss or bite. Beautician Olga Vysotskaya told socialbites.ca that in medicine, the term “ecchymosis” is used for hickey.

According to it, mechanical damage to the capillaries (small blood vessels) occurs in the affected area of the epidermis. Most often they appear in sensitive areas – neck, arms, chest.

Such symptoms on the body may vary in severity, location and appearance. The hickey, which at first appears as a simple rash, turns into the characteristic blue or purple color of the bruise over time, turning into green and yellow as it heals.

Although these love marks do not cause serious harm to health, they can be aesthetically undesirable and sometimes painful. In general, hickeys occur for a variety of reasons.

Mechanical damage to capillaries. During a particularly passionate kiss, a vacuum effect can be created, causing the pressure in the capillaries to increase and, as a result, their rupture. This causes blood to be released from the vessels into the surrounding tissues, thus causing the bruise.

Skin tone and blood supply. In people with thin or fair skin, hickeys may be more noticeable and stronger because the capillaries are closer to the surface of the epidermis. People with vasculitis or vitamin C deficiency may also be more susceptible to bruising.

Use of certain medications. Medications that affect blood clotting (such as aspirin or anticoagulants) may increase the risk of capillary rupture and hickey formation.

Hormone levels. Especially in women, changes in hormone levels can affect the permeability and fragility of capillaries, increasing the tendency to form hickeys.

Vysotskaya explained that the damaged area usually heals on its own. This occurs over a period of 3-14 days, depending on the severity of the bruise and the speed at which the blood vessels at the injury site are repaired.

To speed up the healing process, you can use medications that reduce inflammation and swelling. But it is important to understand that no medication or cosmetic procedure will remove the bruise in one day.

Folk methods and improvised remedies against hiccups

cold compress

Applying a cold compress or ice to the hickey for the first 24 to 48 hours can help reduce inflammation and the rate of bleeding under the skin. Use ice wrapped in a cloth to prevent your skin from freezing. Thanks to this method, the color of the hematoma will become pale as the cold will cause the blood vessels to narrow.

Fomentation

After the first 48 hours of using cold compresses or bandages, you can switch to hot compresses. Heat helps dilate blood vessels and improve blood circulation, which helps dissolve blood pooling under the skin.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera has soothing and cooling properties that can help relieve irritation and speed skin healing. You need to squeeze the juice from the chopped leaves, dip a piece of bow or gauze into it and apply to the problem area. You can use ready-made ointments or creams containing aloe.

Potatoes, onions and cabbage

A classic folk remedy is regular veggies, which is believed to help reduce the redness and size of the hickey. Semicircular potato or onion slices can be applied directly to the painful area. Lotions made from crushed products are also suitable. It is recommended to apply the mixture on the hematoma and leave it for at least an hour. Cabbage leaves can also be chopped or crushed into a paste and used in a similar way.

Soda

To alleviate Hickey’s, you can mix baking soda with a small amount of water to form a thick paste. The resulting paste should be applied to the affected area, wrap the area with a bandage or a simple scarf and leave it overnight. It should be washed with warm water in the morning.

light massage

Gently massaging the injured area of skin can improve blood circulation and help the hickey go away. Avoid applying too much pressure as it could make the situation worse.

tea bags

Chilled tea bags, especially green tea, contain tannins that promote tissue healing. Let the tea bag cool to a comfortable temperature or place it in the refrigerator. Then apply it on the bruise for 10-15 minutes. Repeat the procedure several times a day.

Nutrition

Increasing your intake of foods rich in vitamins C and K may help strengthen capillary walls and speed up the healing process. Green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, broccoli and strawberries contain sufficient amounts of these vitamins.

How to get rid of hickeys using pharmaceutical products

Heparin ointments

Heparin is an anticoagulant that helps prevent blood clotting and improves blood microcirculation. The use of heparin ointment can accelerate the absorption of blood accumulated under the skin after hickey. Apply a thin layer of ointment to the affected area two to three times a day and rub gently until completely absorbed. Remember that heparin ointment is best stored in the refrigerator.

Arnica extract creams

Arnica contains compounds that can inhibit inflammation and speed tissue healing. This makes it effective in reducing the visibility and discomfort of bruises. Apply the cream to the hickey several times a day. Avoid use on broken skin or open wounds.

Vitamin K ointments

Vitamin K plays an important role in the blood clotting process, which can help speed the healing of bruises. Ointments containing vitamin K will help speed up the process of repairing damaged capillaries. Apply the ointment to the acne area once or twice a day until the bruise disappears.

Troxerutin (troxevasin)

Troxerutin strengthens the vascular wall, reduces capillary permeability and fragility, which helps reduce swelling and inflammation. The gel is applied to the affected areas twice a day – preferably in the morning and evening – by gently rubbing until completely absorbed.

ibuprofen

Ibuprofen has an anti-inflammatory effect, which can help reduce pain and inflammation around the hickey. Take ibuprofen as directed on the package: usually 200 to 400 mg every four to six hours as needed. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

It is important to consult your doctor before using any medication, especially if you have allergies, are pregnant or breast-feeding, or are currently taking any other medications. This will help prevent side and unwanted effects.

How to hide hickey with makeup?

Star makeup artist-stylist Black Rosa told socialbites.ca that with the help of cosmetics you can not only emphasize your advantages, but also hide your flaws – cover bruises and acne after passionate kisses.

Often use a concealer or corrector with a greenish tint to hide the hematoma on the skin. The make-up artist emphasized that the cosmetic product should be well distributed on the skin in order to hide acne and not create a blemish effect. Then apply foundation and powder on top.
