Actor Gera Sandler said in an interview with socialbites.ca that they were disturbed by the Netflix series “Unorthodox” with the participation of Jews. He stated that Jewish viewers found something in the series that wasn’t actually there.
“At first the Orthodox were offended by their beloved “Unorthodox” because we allegedly showed them in the wrong light. “Then secular Jews were offended that we didn’t make enough fun of the Orthodox,” Sandler explained.
The actor emphasized that the plot of the series is actually complementary to Jews:
“The part that concerns our Orthodox family and the part that the girl spends with secular people in Berlin are very different from each other. The coldness and incomprehensibility of hipster teenage life in Berlin contrasts with the extraordinary warmth of the Jewish home. In addition, the hero himself always says that he does not leave home, not because of contradictions with religion, but because he is stuck in the closed environment of the community, which does not allow his personality to show itself.
According to Sandler, “Unorthodox” was best loved by non-Jews “from Colombians to ordinary Russian viewers.”
