Author George RR Martin, who is known for his ruthlessness towards Game of Thrones characters, finds his reputation as a serial killer greatly exaggerated. In a recent interview, the author recalled that in the fourth episode of Star Wars alone, many more people died.
At the same time, Martin criticized the film George Lucas (George Lucas) for the destruction of the planet Alderaan. According to the writer, every death should have an emotional response, but many authors downplay its significance.
Star Wars has killed more characters than me! In the very first movie, the entire planet of Alderaan was blown up, with about 20 billion people on it, and they’re all dead. And you know what? Nobody cares. Everyone on Alderaan died. Well okay. But we don’t know any people on Alderaan. We don’t feel their death. It’s just statistics. If you’re going to write about death, you have to feel it.
Martin, on the other hand, quoted the Red Wedding chapter, in which Robb Stark, his wife and mother were murdered. It was very difficult for the writer to part with his favorite characters, with whom he spent about ten years. But this is exactly how, he believes, one should write about death.
I’ve read the entire book except the Red Wedding chapter. It was such a painful chapter for me, I lost so many characters I knew and loved. Nine years I was with them, and now I would brutally kill them! That was hard.
It’s a terrible chapter and it upsets people. She is angry, upset. People throw a book against the wall or in the fireplace. When this scene was shown on television, it made the same impression on tens of thousands, if not millions of people. I think this is good. We are talking about death here! […]
If I’m going to write a death scene, especially for the main characters, I want the reader to feel that. That’s what the Red Wedding, I think, successfully dealt with.
