A document signed by Charles Darwin will be sold at auction 13:18

A paper signed by Charles Darwin will be put up for sale at Sotheby’s in New York. He writes about it”BBC“.

Darwin was not in the habit of archiving his papers, so very little original material has survived. Extant material is almost always signed by scientists in abbreviated form: “Ch Darwin”. The paper offered for the auction is signed by “Charles Darwin”, who bears his own signature. Over £1 million is expected to be paid for the party.

An excerpt from the third edition of The Origin of Species was written on paper. Darwin himself chose this material for publication in The Autographic Mirror.

Sotheby’s 19th century science historian, Dr. Kalika Sands said: “What makes this page different is that Darwin chose the passage he wanted to relate to himself and his legacy. <...> In this passage he talks about natural selection, he talks about Newton, he talks about the possibility of higher forces, but he also says that nothing explains these theories.
