dive into the mirror

Cris Bartual works to transfer photography to a tactile and physical dimension to explore alternative ways of representing reality. The project presented in this residence is called “Immerse yourself in a mirror”, it offers us the opportunity to experience images, to discover new places by traveling in them. In the process of working, he conducts experiments using devices such as cameras or scanners, which he monitors the close areas of his environment, with the intention of producing new visual realities either from the technological malfunctions of the instruments he works with or from the findings of creativity. process. Photography was born 200 years ago as a means of representing reality, but photography today is capable of producing multiple realities. “Immerse yourself in a mirror” explores the importance of the technological apparatus when it comes to representing and saying things we cannot see, because everything we observe hides new languages. The title of the project expresses the unknown of the intangible, going through a mirror is like going through an image printed or projected on a screen, seeing what is behind it to find a new form of representation of what we already know.

I propose a mural with different transmission channels that I work with using research and video, painting, drawing and even artificial intelligence.

Rabasa: Imaginary Map of a Useless Region

Rabasa, a harsh and decadent-looking remnant landscape located on the outskirts of Alicante city, coexisting in delicate balance with the city and operating at the margins of urban dynamics, is an unavoidable region of extreme drought. Rabasa is the opposite of being the utopian ideal landscape living in our cultural imaginary, but its distinctive features make it a zone of resistance to progress, antisocial desire to leave the world and escape from the present makes it a different place. an alternative place to live in the city, or rather to escape from it. Walking through these places forces us to step away from the widely accepted canons of beauty and discover that another aesthetic is possible in these landscapes. To live in these landscapes is to embrace the absence, the insecurity, the asceticism, the less at the expense of the less. It’s about positioning yourself on the other side, on the edge, to look from the outside. Exploring the urban environment is, in a sense, a return to slow time, or why not, its absence, a positioning against the flow of urban living styles, an escape from the virtual to the material. The sensory experience of the landscape provides us with another experience of the region and ourselves.

photo series Source Investigates the importance of the hand in the evolution process of modern humans. It has a direct relationship not only at the anatomical level, but also conceptually, that is, with the emergence of “symbolic thought” in the evolution of the brain and, accordingly, with its artistic production. The project documents the spaces in which these first manifestations take place, the context that houses them, the materials and tools used, as well as the formal plastic result (paintings and engravings found on the walls of caves and rock shelters). In the first phase, the project focuses on 3 caves located in the province of Málaga (Cueva de Ardales, del Tesoro and Nerja), where dozens of paintings and engravings from more than 65,000 years have accumulated.
