Vienna sausages recognized as a UNESCO cultural heritage site 04:31

Sausage stalls in Vienna, the capital of Austria, were included in UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list. writes about this Associated Press (AP).

“The granting of UNESCO status is a tribute to the traditions, hospitality and diversity of our city,” Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig said in his statement.

He emphasized that the new status is recognition of the city’s residents, whose “warmth and charm make sausage stands more than just a place to grab a bite, but a meeting place where joy and culture come together.”

The publication notes that the street sausage stand is known for bringing together people from different classes and different lifestyles, and also has a distinctive vocabulary.

The sausage-making tradition dates back to the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire before World War I, when veterans opened mobile kitchen shops to make ends meet, the AP wrote. Würstelstand Leo, the city’s oldest standing kiosk, has been serving sausages since 1928. When permission was obtained in 1969, the number of kiosks increased.
