The main characters of the series – Emma (“How I Met Your Mother” and “Hang Out in Palm Springs” Christine Milioti actress) and their spouses Noah (star of “The Good Place” William Jackson Harper) – come to the Mexican resort. Celebrate wedding anniversaries. But the holiday is planned with more enthusiasm than the call of the heart: the relationship between the spouses is getting colder and the only thing with enough mental strength is to argue that their marriage is still alive.

During a failed ATV ride, Emma accidentally finds an old cell phone in the woods and is dying to find its owner. She soon learns that the former owner of the cell phone is a young man who disappeared 15 years ago. Thus begins Emma’s own investigation, which Noah joins in: They suspect that the evil associated with the local dangerous clan is raging at the resort. But perhaps everything is even more complicated – and it is not bad people, but otherworldly forces that are to blame.

The most obvious comparison for “The Resort” is last year’s HBO hit “White Lotus,” but aside from the similar resort theme of hapless people, these projects have little in common. Much closer to the series, Woody Allen’s 1993 detective comedy Murder Mystery in Manhattan tells the story of old wives out of boredom embarking on their own investigation into the sudden death of a beautiful neighbor. “Holiday” and the upcoming remake “, created by the author of “Mr. Robot”metropolis» Sam Esmail takes over Allen’s detective wordplay, completing it with a mystical component and family drama. It strikes the perfect balance of suspenseful suspense and comedy summer romance.

In addition to Esmail, Andy Ciara, the writer of “Hang in Palm Springs”, is responsible for the script, which curiously plays on the theme of time jumps and deceives audience expectations. “Plant” does the same trick.

Starting with recognizable scenes from a sweet family life, where the spouses already had little wow effect, the project at first seems like a drama about the breakup of relationships. Ironically, almost simultaneously with The Resort, a similar show aired with Milioti’s How I Met Your Mother colleague Neil Patrick Harris, the gay drama Singles. In the series, the character of Harris explores the world of other men after a painful breakup.

But if Darren Star’s new series, reminiscent of the queer version of Sex and the City, fits any particular genre, The Resort is more creative. Esmail and Ciar’s brainchild is a rich cocktail of everything, everywhere and at the same time, instantly “connecting” the audience.

Along with the wonderful onscreen duo of Milioti and Harper, you want to explore every corner that was once prosperous but nearly destroyed by a whirlwind vacation. In their company, you want to deal with mysterious clues, track down suspects, fear snooping, and have fun in the face of the absurdity of what’s going on.

But the main interest of the show is the further development of the plot – its main danger. If the mystical and detective elements continue to intensify, the audience will definitely not get bored. But the writers risk going the other way – and the main mystery of the story will be toothless: perhaps all these adventures are a way for the marriage-longing protagonists to spice up their relationship. This will certainly save their family, but it will disappoint the audience’s expectations.

Whether your show will be a creative multi-genre toy like Hang in Palm Springs, or will it crash in the middle, that is the question. However, while the heroes are so diligently mingling in the past, let’s not get ahead of the events, let’s try to look to the future. Also, such a plot can be reserved by the authors for the next series.
