A pastel by artist Claude Monet, stolen from a Jewish couple by the Nazis during World War II, was returned to the family’s grandchildren. writes about this Guard referring to the authorities.
“In 1940, the Nazis confiscated their property (from the Jewish couple – socialbites.ca), including seven other works of art, and the pastel was purchased by a Nazi dealer,” the report says.
The painting, which Monet painted around 1865, later “disappeared” in 1941, the publication writes. FBI agents launched an investigation into pastel theft in 2021. This was done after Europe’s Stolen Art Commission contacted authorities about the pastel.
According to The Guardian, the organization determined that a New Orleans art dealer purchased the pastel in 2017 and resold it to private collectors two years later.
Thus, the pastel went on sale at an art gallery in Houston, Texas, in 2023, according to the FBI.
Later, FBI agents, along with NYPD detectives, contacted the owners, who were unaware of the pastel’s origins, and explained that the artwork had been stolen from its rightful owners.
As a result, the owners voluntarily surrendered the Monet pastels to the authorities and also gave up their property rights. The work was returned to the grandchildren of its rightful owners, Helen Lowe and Francoise Parlagi.
