Citing a source at the court, the newspaper El Pais wrote that the Spanish prosecutor’s office offered the singer Shakira to pay a fine if taxes were not paid to avoid the risk of jail time.
According to media reports, the prosecution voiced such a recommendation to avoid prosecution, but Shakira found it disproportionate and contrary to her own interests. An insider noted that because of this, the singer refused the prosecution. Now the ministry will present an indictment to the court, Shakira could face jail time if found guilty.
The artist is accused of paying $15 million in taxes on his income from 2012-2014. His place of residence was questioned as prosecutors claimed that Shakira lived in Spain and that her official residence at the time was in the Bahamas.
Previously The court dismissed Shakira’s appeal in the tax evasion case.
