The Institute of National Memory of Ukraine described Kiev-born writer Mikhail Bulgakov as a “symbol of Russian imperial politics”, along with composer Mikhail Glinka and poet Joseph Brodsky. The organization’s website reports this.

A commission of experts convened by the UINM ruled that Bulgakov was an “ardent Ukrainophobe” who spoke negatively about the Ukrainian nationalist leaders of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, which arose during the Civil War, including his works. He also supported the White Guards and communism simultaneously, according to the UINP.

UINP also spoke negatively about Brodsky and mentioned his poem “For the Independence of Ukraine”. In addition, Alexander Solzhenitsyn came under criticism from UINP experts for his work “How to organize Russia”.

A bust of Leonid Brezhnev, formerly General Secretary of the Soviet Union painted in the Dnepropetrovsk region of Ukraine, where he is a native.

Previously Rada passed the law About the dismantling of monuments associated with the Russian Federation and the USSR.
