The 55-year-old actor will portray an Iraq war veteran named Neil Maven. In the story, Maven forms an alliance with other military veterans against the Boston drug trade.
The role in the film marks Smith’s first high-profile project since her role in 2022’s Deliverance. Following Chris Rock’s face slap scandal at the Oscars, the actor lost major film roles for a while.
The action movie Sugar Bandits is based on Chuck Hogan’s 2010 book Devils in Exile. The project has been in development for over a decade since a film adaptation of the book was proposed by Universal in 2013.
