Italian Deputy Minister of Culture, art critic Vittorio Zgarbi, will leave his post due to the suspicion of the theft of a painting and the allegations of the Italian Antimonopoly Service. In this respect reports news agency RAI.
Zgarbi announced his resignation on the sidelines of journalist Nicola Porro’s La Ripartenza event in Milan.
“I resigned to become Zgarbi. If they say that I cannot give a conference, hold an exhibition, or write a book because I am a deputy minister, I will resign. “The law implemented by the Antimonopoly Service does not distinguish between paid and free services,” he explained.
In January 2024, it became known that the politician and art critic was suspected of stealing a 17th-century painting and fabricating the story of its origin. Rutilio Manetti’s painting “The Captivity of St. Peter” disappeared from a castle in Piedmont in 2013, and the painting was displayed in an exhibition in 2021 as part of Sgarbi’s personal collection. However, they differed in size and artistic details. Zgarbi denied the accusations. It is also known that the Antimonopoly Service receives complaints against the politician.
