In his interview with socialbites.ca, Soviet and Russian animated film director Yuri Norshtein said that the late director and poet Otar Ioseliani represented human dignity in cinema. According to him, he and Ioseliani had known each other for more than 45 years.

“For me, it’s a terrible message because you always think maybe this will pass, it will go away. But it didn’t work; The body’s resources are exhausted. As a director, as a person, Otar represented human dignity in cinema. In general, art is supposed to constantly remind people of this, but something goes wrong. Otar uses this theme in the movie. It gives the impression that he only made one movie because his personality came out through the movies. I think this is its main feature. Of course, he knew culture and art history well. He read a lot – he had a lot of literature in his memory. It came as a complete surprise to me when I learned that he was one of Mayakovsky’s favorite poets. I read this in an interview where he blatantly quoted Mayakovsky. He and I also agreed to translate poetry from Spanish and Portuguese. Norshtein even said, “It turned out that we shared the same verses with him.”

People’s Artist admitted that he did not call Otar Ioseliani back recently, but maintained communication through his friend, journalist Yuri Rost.

“He (Yuri Rost. – socialbites.ca) was in contact with him. He told me everything about himself and even showed me photos of Otar from Tbilisi. In general, Otar and I started such an unprofessional relationship in 1977. From that moment on, he and I became very close in terms of our views on art, life, and our understanding of what cinema is. And there were only human conversations at the table; perhaps it was more than just any cinema,” concluded Norshtein.

Soviet, Georgian, French film director and screenwriter Otar Ioseliani has died at the age of 90. Photographer and journalist Yuri Rost reported this on his Telegram channel.

Ioseliani is the People’s Artist of the Georgian SSR, and this title was awarded to him in 1984. In 1980, the director emigrated to France and continued cinematography there.
