Alicante City Council Cultural Department will purchase contemporary works of art for the third year in a row To artists and galleries from the province of Alicante worth 60,000 eurosIn accordance with the call launched in 2021 for the purchase of contemporary art from local creators, its funds will be transferred to the cultural heritage of the city and deposited in different municipal offices.
Purpose of this initiative Getting to know the works of contemporary artists and at the same time we enrich municipal collections. The deadline for submission of works for possible purchases begins this Wednesday and ends on October 16.
The works will be compared with contemporary art galleries and artists. Exceptionally and for agreed reasons, the committee may consider proposals from another source. Acquired works must meet the following requirements: be works produced by a living or deceased artist (or group of artists), Born and/or resident in the province of Alicante with a professional career connected to the city.
Additionally, any gallery or artist can make a presentation. maximum three offers buy. Three works or groups of works to be evaluated in this way must be offered at a single common price. Artists will not be able to present works both individually and through their galleries at the same time. The theme, discipline and production technique of the works will be determined. free choice. Works must be produced at the proposal stage, not at the draft or project stage.
Culture council member Nayma Beldjilali underlined the fact that “for the third year in a row, the department continues its program of acquiring works of art that contribute to the visibility of Alicante artists.” The council member added, “We believe that it is an incentive for artists to have their works included in a collection as important as the municipal collection. The success of participation in the first two calls is proof of this.”

Ministry of Culture will invest maximum 60,000 euros reserves the right not to consume the budget in case the selection of works is completely or partially abandoned.
The City Council may purchase a maximum of one work from each artist/gallery; This work cannot be from artists whose works were purchased in the last three years. Selected works will be purchased after the relevant contract is formalized and payment will be made upon receipt of the work and presentation of the invoice. The municipality reserves the right not to evaluate works that may cause installation and durability problems.
Previous calls
Last year, the Ministry of Culture invested 62 thousand euros to purchase four sculptures, a photographic print, a digital photograph, mixed media on fabric and acrylic on canvas. Among more than a hundred pieces these were presented. The artists selected were: Isidro Blasco, Elena Aguilera, Juan Carlos Nadal, Rosana Antolí, Olga Diego, Pablo Bellot, Ana Teresa Ortega and Ana Pastor.
In contrast, in the first year a total of 248 works by 150 artists were presented, nine of which were selected from among the artists for 62,300 euros. Aurelio Ayela, Miguel Bañuls, Ana Esteve Reig, Daniel G. Andújar, Susana Guerrero, Aurelia Masanet, Luisa Pastor, Colectivo ORGIA And Jesus Zuazo.
In 2022, the first acquisitions were exhibited in an exhibition at the Alicante Fish Market, and the Ministry states that the new acquired works will probably be exhibited in 2024.
