Men G: “When we were young, we didn’t know how good we were because we were unconscious”

Anyone can tell that he is already 60 years old… The leader of Hombres G, although he looks “old”, he acts, moves and talks like a real kid. Maybe it would be beneficial for him to continue singing the songs he composed forty years ago. On Saturday, David Summers and his band will show off their eternal youth at the Murcia Artillery Barracks.

They say what’s trendy goes out of style, but forty years later Hombres G is still there.

We have always escaped from it, and I firmly believe that ours is not a fashion but something more monstrous. At that time we were running away from Madrid Movida, small keyboards and weird hairstyles. We didn’t want to be an eighties band in the eighties and we stuck with it. We never wanted to belong to any music movement or be part of a particular gang. We have always waged war on ourselves and continue to do so. We won’t do it because reggaeton is trendy.

I do not see.

Neither do I.

They were full in the eighties, and they are full now.

I couldn’t explain why, and we can only be grateful to the public. What happened to us has never happened to anyone else. It’s incredible and a miracle that the four of us are here. We’ve been together our whole lives. We’ve played over 4,000 concerts and we’re still having the same fun. We grew old together, playing big venues and always with a dedicated audience that ranged from teenagers to our age of 60. A new wave of children discovering us with the movie.

Forty years is a long time at the foot of the canyon.

There were many, but they passed me by. I guarantee. I guess I can say that forty years is nothing.

Who ages better, your songs or you?

I think about my songs because nothing harms them.

Did I think we were going to talk about G Men at this point?

No way. I thought I would feel ridiculous singing Sufre mamon at the age of 50. And I actually said that to my ex-wife. I told him: “Never let me go on stage to sing that at 50, it would make me look ridiculous.” And the day came when I turned 50 and I said it on the microphone and there it was. And so I sang. Ten years have passed and I’m still singing this song at 60 years old. And I’m afraid I’ll do it with 65. This song doesn’t seem to have a ceiling. Unbelievable. It is the people who do not allow us to retire, the truth is…

Has this phenomenon been given the value it deserves?

By whom? For the public, yes, without a doubt. Another thing is critics or award givers and things like that. And no, I don’t think so about them.

Do you think they treated you unfairly?

I think we pay the price to be free, to fight on our own and not belong to any guild or gang. Independence always comes with a price, but I swear if I had to start over, I would do it the same way. There is nothing I value more than my independence and freedom in work. We were lucky to have the public’s appreciation and that got us selling millions of records and selling out concerts; I assure you this is the greatest reward an artist can receive. It is true that, now that we are older, they have begun to recognize us and begin to give us the rewards they had denied us. They entertain us all day long. It’s sad but that’s the way it is.

Looking back, what do you think of the David of the eighties or the G Men of the beginning?

We were so good and didn’t know it. We were very unconscious. Without realizing it, we made beautiful songs that lasted forty years and never get old. This is very complicated. We learned as we went and unintentionally made some super cool songs for that era. There are songs that I wrote when I was 18-20 and that still affect me when I sing them.

Do you feel less professionally free than before?

Yes, but I’m still free. I continue to write what I want and I don’t run away from anything. The thing is, I didn’t write anything with the intention of hurting anyone. The exact opposite. For me, music should be a balm and songs should serve to make people happy and enlighten their hearts. That’s why I don’t veto myself and I don’t think I need to change even a single comma of what I wrote.

Are you more resentful now than before?

The problem is that most people get annoyed by stupid things. And the ones that are really annoying aren’t that many, but they make a lot of noise. There are many more people who are afraid of these crimes and the stupid radical revisionism that exists. We tend to think that everything is messed up and people are crazy in their minds, but these are just some of the things that are also making a lot of noise.

Lack of a sense of humor?

They want to blame him. A sense of humor has no meaning without sarcasm and sarcasm. Before, we could laugh at everything and it was very healthy because a sense of humor gets you out of scary situations and helps a lot in life. It helped us manage our lives. We laughed at everything. Phew, we had so much fun.

How can forty years be fit into a single year? concert and not to disappoint anyone?

It is not easy because the public knows everything and wants to hear it. We usually play two and a half hours, about thirty songs. Imagine choosing thirty songs out of 140… It’s very difficult. But we know that the audience will be happy from the first song to the last song. We go out, we sing, we play, and it’s the audience that makes the show.

Did you feel nostalgic while making your choice?

I’m always looking forward and I’m not nostalgic, but I must admit that the past times were great and I can’t complain. I’ve had a privileged life where I’ve had maximum fun and done the things I love. I never stopped working. We have given nearly 4,000 concerts throughout our lives, and this year we will perform 48 of them in very large venues. We’ll kill him and have a big explosion. As long as this lasts, we’ll keep going, and if the hull holds, we’ll be there for another 40 years.

Which song are you uncomfortable singing when you are 60?

No, because if something bothers me, I won’t sing.

We rotate, which one is your favourite?

It’s very difficult to choose one but I really love playing and singing, I can say that because it clouds my soul. Then I would tell you that Sufre mamon gave me everything. I’m talking to you today because I did this job one day. Obvious. I too had incredible live experiences with Temlando… I almost touched the sky singing the song in front of 90,000 people in Los Angeles.
