Prado rescues Paret, the forgotten painter of “parallel life” with Goya

This Prado Museum presented Monographic exhibition ‘Paret’, 24 May – 21 AugustBringing together more than 80 works of a painter who remained in the background in art history due to his overlapping with Goya, “one of the greatest giants of western art”.

“It’s not about playing parallel lives or who’s better, but we can say that Paret is as important as or more important than Goya for a good understanding of 18th century Spain,” said Miguel Falomir, director of the art gallery. presentation of the exhibition.

Curiously, Paret and Goya were born in the same year (1746) and even entered the Academy of Fine Arts on the same date. and shared their patron, infante Don Luis.

However, Goya lived longer—Paret died in 1799, while also starting the Zaragoza painter ‘Caprichos’ series—though by the end of the century both had been “equally surprising and innovative”.

Paret shows a different Spain, more connected to science He was—infinitely more educated—as well as having connections with a European world that wasn’t merely high nobility or chulapos and majas. It is important to remember that different aesthetic proposals coexisted in the past because they tend to be uniform,” Falomir argued.

The exhibition offers a complete tour of Paret’s career and is divided into nine sections. Exactly, the first part is a Key drawing of Goya’s first stage with his first documented paintingboth, also on a topic of Hannibal history.

The remaining chapters are a small group of Paret’s early drawings, III.

The exhibition closes with an unfinished painting of the Botanical Garden from ‘Paseo del Prado’.It represents the view of the entrance to the garden located near the museum.

Prado’s director said, “Every time we launch this kind of exhibition, we ask ourselves if the artist is worth it, because it’s a significant investment of time and money. And in this case, the answer was yes for a number of reasons.” Remembering that Paret was known as the Spanish ‘Watteau’, the famous painter of the late French baroque.

Paret is known for its qualityIt emerges because, at the risk of presenting new aspects of Art History for its social value as a chronicler of Spain in the mid-eighteenth century, it runs in line with the museum long ago and allows for a reflection on how Spanish art history was constructed. It AND a commitment to realism and magnificence”, he stated.

Falomir used words such as “sophistication, grace, cosmopolitanism or humor” to describe Paret’s work, which Spanish painting at the time saw as “an entirely different painter who looked like a separate island”. “Sometimes it feels like a UFO has landed on the planet while the painting is being done,” said the art gallery director.

In Paret’s career, her closeness to baby Don Carlos was crucial, who paid her a three-year exile to Puerto Rico in 1775 for covering up her affairs. This black mole in his 33-year professional career was later dissolved by the Spanish Crown through periodic commissions from Carlos III and Carlos IV.
