In the frame – the beauty of the Australian outback

The action of the show takes place in the fictional village of Deadloch, located in Tasmania, despite its somewhat Scottish name (“loch” translates as “lake”, in Russia it would be something like Mertvozersk). It is an island state of Australia, separated from the mainland by the Bass Strait. In all of Tasmania, about half a million people live in Dedloch, which is washed by the ocean on one side and surrounded by picturesque forests, mountains, waterfalls and actually a lake on the other.

As usual with dark detectives about some outback (Broadchurch, Meir of Easttown, and Top of the Lake) where everyone knows each other but knows nothing about each other, that number starts to drop: bodies are found in Deadloch. choking and, worse, cutting tongues. Remarkably, they are all male. It seems that not only women can lie somewhere heartbreaking and completely breathless (that’s what equality is).

The adorable duo starring Kate Box and Madeleine Sami

Two cops take over the case: Dulcie Collins and Eddie Radcliffe (yes, the latter is referred to as if the protagonist of the future Harry Potter series).

First (played by Cate Box from Stateless, produced by Cate Blanchett) He moved here from Sydney with his wife to save the marriage. One of the conditions was to refuse the detective job, but Dulcie cannot help herself: she is too good a detective to give up her talent, especially since her other colleagues do not shine with full competence. It’s also hard to keep up with her work because only two local police officers treat her truly positively: the good-natured mattress Sven Alderman and the indecisive, lively Abby Matsuda. (Played by Tom Ballard and Nina Oyama, host and writer of the comedy show Tonight with Tom Ballard.).

Since he was not officially a detective in Deadloch (Dulcy voluntarily transferred to senior sergeants), Radcliffe was sent here from Darwin (this is literally the other end of Australia) – a “boy” and a fool who at first glance constantly draws hasty conclusions, Sprinkles obscene words, makes unpleasant sounds and smells, and has great difficulty remembering names for some reason.

That role went to Madeleine Sami, a New Zealand actress, director, comedian and quite a prominent figure in theater, television and cinema in general. In particular, Sami came up with the TV series “SuperCity” – a comedy project about five (more on later) residents of Auckland. The trick was that all the characters were played by Sami. The director of the first season was Taika Waititi, writer of What We Do in the Shadows, Jojo Rabbit, and recent Thors comedies (the cinematographer has collaborated with him more than once since). In the context of Dedloch, another point in Sami’s filmography seems funny: in the same 2013, he played a small role in Top of the Lake.

The duet of Box and Sami, whose protagonists first endlessly argue and then become watery, is a huge casting success for the writers of “Dadloch”.

Great humor in the spirit of “Cool type”, “The Garvey Sisters Conspiracy” and “Paranormal Wellington”

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want a world where not only women but men and women alike were always afraid,” the heroine joked. sketch College Humor about gender imbalance that is not in the most obvious areas of human activity. All eight episodes of “Dadloch” flood the audience with humor from about the same area: tickling the border of absurdity, often causing fits of hysterical laughter.

Joking about cop movies in the tradition of Briton Edgar Wright’s “Like Hard Cops” comedy mixes with the caustic feminism of Sharon Horgan, the Irishman who found the “Garvey Sisters Conspiracy” here. And also – with the stupidity of “Paranormal Wellington”, a spin-off of “What We Do in the Shadows”, written by Waititi of New Zealand about a couple of stupid but extremely attractive cops.

As a detective that’s not bad either – just right for summer evenings

In English, the name “Deadloch” is compatible with the word “dead end”, which can be translated as “dead end” or “no way out”. Approximately in this case, “Dadloch” puts its heroines between comic punches: the timing of the series is dramatic (episodes last about an hour), borrowed from mocking objects.

That’s how far the dignified show stands: Besides being an excellent comedy, it’s also pretty believable, actually making for a detective story that wouldn’t be so easy to understand prematurely. And finally, “Dadloch” reaches truly impressive heights, making his way into a tense thriller. Also, behind the local eccentric comedy lurks some pretty compelling drama: Besides the overt feminist message, the series manages to bring commentary on class inequality, racism, homophobia and bullying into the narrative.

This is the first major project of aspiring comics Kate McCartney and Kate McLennan, whose careers will be interesting to watch.

INSIDE Guard It is mentioned that Kate McCartney and Kate McLennan do not remember how or when they met each other. They separately built their careers in comedy for quite some time – everything changed in the early 2010s, when the girls nevertheless decided to work together and became inseparable (almost like the protagonists of the Dulcie and Eddie shows). Since then, they have proven themselves to be sketch geniuses: first parodies of culinary projects under the pun name “Catering Show” became a huge success, then McCartney and McLennan also successfully made fun of morning shows on “Get Krack!n”. . Australian actresses Miranda Tapsell and Nakkia Louie made statements about racism in Australia in their latest issue. That is why the partners did not begin to combine comedy with serious conversations in Dedloch, their first real big project, which had a good chance of success outside their homeland.

After more than ten years of a joint career, the two Kates forever exchange memes, live next door (her children are also friends), and surprisingly do not get tired of each other: “Dadloch” is over, they immediately went out for drinks and discussing the second season. It will be extremely interesting to find out what will come out of this: After all, behind the needle drop of the Tatu group “Everything He Said”, there is clearly an extraordinary talent.
