“A curse. Unfinished Chapter (Ghost Writer), dir. Paul Wilkins – from July 6

In search of inspiration and solitude, writer Gilliger Graham travels to an old family estate where his unlike-successful father once died under mysterious circumstances. At home, the hero finds his father’s unfinished manuscript. Jealous of the parent’s work, Gilliger decides to make the text his own. By doing so, however, he accidentally summons an ancient demon responsible for his father’s death.

This British art-horror film has won two awards at the Prague Film Festival: starring Luke Mably and artist Belle Mundy. It turned out to be a voluminous and unusual film about creative genius and the curse of finding inspiration.

Centaur, principal. Kirill Chemnitz – from 13 July

An almost hermetic thriller set in just one night. Yura Borisov’s hero, Sasha, is a taxi driver who likes to work at night (freer roads, quieter passengers). Lisa (Anastasia Talyzina) also works late and calls a taxi to go home.

Along the way, the characters get to know each other, and mutual sympathy seems to arise between them. But as their journey drags on, Sasha becomes more suspicious and Lisa begins to fear seriously for her life.

Fools’ Paradise, director. Charlie Day – from 20 July

At the center of this satirical story is a goofy hero who came to Los Angeles by bus and suddenly became a star because of his resemblance to the famous reclusive actor. A man like a magnet attracts the same eccentrics and embarks on the most incredible adventures.

Charlie Day, star of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Horrible Bosses, is making his directorial debut and producing a flamboyant skit from his distinguished colleagues. He starred Jason Sudeikis, John Malkovich, Adrien Brody, Kate Beckinsale and Ray Liotta in his feature film debut, and it was one of the last projects in his career.

“Fight the Devil” (“Sympathy for the Devil”), dir. Yuval Adler – from 20 July

Another movie with a taxi lounge as the main venue. Hero Joel Kinnaman (“For the good of all mankind”) is a driver who picks up a random companion, performed by Nicolas Cage. Their two-hour journey turns into an exciting adventure not only for the characters but also for the audience.

“Fight the Devil” is the closest in form to Michael Mann’s “Partner in Crime” with Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx: in it, the silent driver also turns out to be the hostage of a professional killer. According to the laws of the genre, only one person can always come out of such a fight alive.

Jeanne Du Barry, director. Maiwenn – from 20 July

The story revolves around Jeanne Vaubernier, a young lower-class woman who uses her wit and charm to climb the social ladder. She meets King Louis XV she. (Johnny Depp) and soon becomes a favourite. Thanks to his relations with the king, the enjoyment of life that had long been lost during his long years of reign returns. However, this closeness of the prostitute and the ruler of France does not please his surroundings.

The Russian premiere of the film, which was screened for the first time at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, SESLER Film Festivalin Vologda.

“King of the Streets” (“Omar la fraise”), dir. Elias Belkeddar – from 20 July

A new Cannes premiere that won the director’s “Golden Camera” award. At the center of the movie is Omar, a gangster sentenced to 20 years in a French prison. (Reda Kateb from the Prophet)). To avoid punishment, he flees to his native Algeria, where he plans to sit until everything calms down. His main friend is Roger, the same adventurer and hawker. (star of pianist Benoît Magimel).

But the measured life of the heroes comes to an end when both old accomplices and new enemies appear on the threshold of their home. Gangsters on the run, teaming up with local thugs, turn the city upside down.

See You on Venus, dir. Joaquin Lamas – from 20 July

Mia and Kyle are complete opposites. He is always on the go and perceives life as an open book. He closes himself in and treats everything cautiously. One day, Mia persuades Kyle to go on a joint trip to Spain, where she plans to find her biological mother, whom she has never seen.

In the glove compartment is a list of potential candidates for the role of the girl’s mother and a map of thousands of kilometers. “See you on Venus” is one of the hottest and sunniest broadcasts of the month and is well worth seeing on the big screen.

“Foreign” (“Farang”), dir. Xavier Jeans – from 27 July

Tense and dynamic action movie from Xavier Jeans (“Gangs of London”, “Hitman”), with enthusiasm reminiscent of the Bourne series.

The protagonist of the movie, professional boxer Sam, is out of prison and waiting to start from scratch, but then his past catches up with him and forces him to flee to Thailand. There he finds a family and truly finds a new life. But in the end, the hero still contacts the wrong people: a local gangster forces him to accept a dangerous mission, such as transporting drugs. This leads to a terrible tragedy, after which Sam embarks on a path of revenge.
