Public reading of ‘Orlando’ at Berkana bookstore to combat censorship affecting many theaters and cinemas in the country

last week Fundo Theater Company condemned the censorship of the novel ‘Orlando’ written by Virginia Woolf, in his town valdemorillo. The theater troupe branded an author who questioned and addressed issues such as the role given to women in his literature, gender roles and homosexuality as “ideological veto” and “political censorship”. This happens after Vox, now in the hands of mayor Victoria Amparo Gil from the Abascal party, came to the municipality’s Department of Culture.

Considering this fact, Berkana Bookstore Madrid specializes in LGTBI and located in Chueca this Wednesday hosted a public reading of Woolf’s book at the establishment’s doors: “Given the ‘Orlando’ censorship, we organized a public reading of Virginia Woolf’s book at the door of the bookstore in Berkana”. They also distributed 50 copies to the first people who were encouraged to join the initiative.

Censored works and movies

The author of ‘A Room of One’s Own’ isn’t the only work censored after Vox’s arrival in the Culture departments: in Getafe, Vox demanded that Lope de Vega’s work be withdrawn. “The Villain of Getafe” because of “sexual overtones”, as the company condemns neighborhood theater as reported on social networks and local media.
