Essaam Refaat, legal adviser to the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, filed a complaint with the local Attorney General’s Office against the Netflix platform. He believes the live broadcast violated a number of Egyptian laws by broadcasting the biographical Queen Cleopatra. Refaat demands the film be removed from the platform and banned from showing, writes Egypt Independent.
The official stresses that Netflix did not receive permission to review the artistic idea and the way it was brought to the screen. Streaming also did not consult with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture on how to display the historical Egyptian figure.
According to Refaat, the Netflix project can be interpreted as a historical fraud. According to him, this series and broadcast showed disrespect for Egyptian culture, Egyptian social life and the country’s archaeological heritage. Refaat demands that the series be taken off the air and that the series be banned permanently.
The Queen Cleopatra miniseries premieres on Netflix on May 10. Black actress Jada Pinkett Smith played the main role in the show.
Formerly archaeologist Shaker reproach Netflix is attempting to distort Egyptian history. He believes that Cleopatra is not black. “Queen Cleopatra was of Macedonian descent, so she cannot be of African descent,” he concluded.
