Famous director Hayao Miyazaki’s cartoons will be removed from Russian broadcasting platforms on June 1, due to Studio Ghibli’s decision not to renew its rental rights in Russia. In this respect TASS said an industry source.
“Yes, the distributor’s rights on Studio Ghibli content are expiring, they were unable to renew them,” the insider said.
Shortly before that, content from the Japanese studio began to be sold for one ruble on the Russian streaming site Kinopoisk. It has been announced that you can purchase the cartoons “My Neighbor Totoro”, “Princess Mononoke”, “Howling Castle” and “Ponyo Fish in the Abyss” until May 31st. After this date, the content will only be available to purchasers, this option will disappear for new subscribers.
As the experts explain, in this way the service aims to retain meaningful content and viewers even after the rights to the cartoons expire.
