According to Variety, Tinto Brass, the director of the erotic drama “Caligula”, is threatening to sue over the release of the new version of the film at the 76th Cannes Film Festival.

Rightsholder Penthouse Films International will present a new recut of the movie Caligula: Final Cut at Cannes.

Brass, who has been fighting for exclusive rights for more than 40 years since the tape’s release, was not happy with the tape’s recut. The manager made an official statement threatening to sue.

“There are many versions of Caligula that have been remade by others, including Bob Guccione. But none of them match my original vision. So the people of Cannes will be misled by the use of my name. Now I wash my hands, my lawyers will take care of it,” said the 90-year-old director.

Caligula is a 1979 provocative erotic drama starring Helen Mirren and Malcolm McDowell. The film chronicles the customs of the reign of the ancient Roman emperor Caligula, remembered for his cruelty and ruthless dealings.
