How was this album born?
Born like all Marea records. It is born when its five members are in good personal standing, both individually and collectively. Since we have no other virtue than to come together and make beautiful songs, we come together and make songs when these conditions arise. Then it’s time to save them and go on tour. It’s that simple. I would like to talk about a divine inspiration, but it does not exist. We weren’t thinking of releasing it this early but since the pandemic came we had nothing else to do and when we realized the album was already ready. We didn’t intend to go on the tour because there were two glaciers between tours.
Does the band prefer to be in concert or on a studio recording?
I’m more interested in making songs, that’s what I like. There’s something special about saving them. It’s not very exciting for me to show people the child you gave birth to. However, the family has to meet his grandson. I would keep it for myself.
Critics describe the album as the least dark…
I don’t think our records are too dark. The only dark thing is the cover. The rest is a reflection of living in the present; something easy to preach and difficult to practice. An album where the songs talk about the passage of time, its consequences and the inevitable end.
In the end, death is scary.
Death isn’t funny at all, but now that you can laugh, it’s better to laugh at it.
On December 24, 1997, the five met for the first time in the rehearsal rooms on the outskirts of Pamplona. Did you think that everything you’ve been through in these 25 years will happen to you?
Nobody thinks about it. No band is thinking about it, putting together songs they want, which is magical. We were already professionals when we realized this. We were always thinking of making songs, we weren’t thinking of anything else. It’s happening to us now with more devotion because, inexplicably, more and more people are coming to see us. The root remains the same. The tree has been pruned in different ways, but the root is the same, and that is to make beautiful songs.
Any more pressure?
No, because writing hasn’t gotten much worse or improved. My melody 25 years ago is very similar to my current melody, the lyrics too. When we make a record, people already know what they’re going to find. We tried to set a new record, but luckily we failed. We’ve been making the same song for 25 years. I think every day is better so we still have the day we hit.
What do you think is the success of becoming one of the most solid rock bands and continuing to fill the states?
Hidden? Rock and roll is three chords and truth. A complete nude. My words are so simple…
The songs reach a very wide audience.
Our people are increasingly balding and older, but more resilient. You can still see the children in the front rows, but the number of rows is decreasing. We want them all to be young. There are those who are interested, but only a small part of them because they are interested in other things. We are another generation. I wish it was otherwise. But I also want world peace.
More than a group of friends?
We spend more time together than our families. There is no convenience relationship. There wouldn’t be a group if we didn’t put up with each other.
As with any friendship, will there be fights?
There’s never been a fight. Never. There have been differences of opinion, but there has never been disrespect or a loud voice. There is nothing important enough to spoil this friendship.
What changes has the group experienced in these 25 years?
Our friendship is getting better day by day. Tuning, which used to cost us a day, now costs us half a day. Instead of talking about the crazy night in the van, we talked about the kids and the drugs. This is the change.
What would you say to Kutxi 25 years ago?
I’d give him a few dates where he’d have a few accidents, wouldn’t kill him, but would make him even dumber than he was. Other than that, I won’t say anything. It won’t save him from his clumsiness, but it will save him from being admitted to a lot of emergency rooms. I don’t regret anything. I get along well with my past as I never intentionally hurt anyone. I have been the best father, husband, and son I could be. That doesn’t mean I’m good, but I’ve been my best.
How have these 25 years been in your home?
I’ve been with my wife for 30 years. You know me before. They experienced this with me. I started show business at the age of 16. I don’t remember what my life was like without music and I don’t want that life. My whole life is connected with music. I would have to relearn to live without music.

I don’t have social networks because they don’t interest me, but I have nothing against it. They are definitely very useful. I don’t have WhatsApp either. I’m not interested in new or old technologies, I’m very analog. I don’t have enough inner world to upload it every 15 minutes. I must be a poor soul.
Do you think he would argue?
I would probably be in jail. There is 100% chance. If I did, I would definitely be in prison. Don’t even doubt it. They would have lawsuits filed on different fronts. Instead of rehearsing, he’d be at the law firm now.
You don’t have WhatsApp either, would you rather call?
I want to give a message and you can call from mobile. There is an option where you can talk in real time. If the team makes an effort, they’ll find the button within a minute. Then it depends on whether the addressee wants to receive it from you. This is what I did. Whatsapp is easier than typing but my intelligence is overrated.
Does Marea see herself in music in 25 years?
If the five of us are alive, yes. And with our faculties. I don’t need much for the sound I have. There is always a chance to keep playing.
do we have to reduce concerts?
It will depend on our faculties. We have tours where we give over 70 concerts in eight months, and that’s 24 concerts in seven months. It was our decision because the joints are already starting to deteriorate.
