Anna Castillo (Barcelona, 1993) describes her visit to Gran Canaria this weekend as part of the capital’s 22nd International Film Festival, with the wind blowing from Playa Mujeres in the background. Player who just read jobWritten by Annie Ernaux, it is at a point in her life when, after ten years of continuous learning, she did not hesitate to embrace different professional challenges, starting with her first sound editing. bad decisionseven a romantic comedy mini-series, excellent storyIt will come to light on Netflix this year.
What will the roundtable meeting you attend within the framework of the International Film Festival be like? Gran Canarian palms?
I’m setting the table with my close friend Macarena García. For both Maca and me, it’s important to talk about the ups and downs, good and bad sides of this profession, especially when you’re young. Talking about the pressure that comes with being an actress isn’t just on a feminist level, because we’re two women after all, focusing on what it means to be a young actor and how vulnerable you feel sometimes, especially in the beginnings.
What would you highlight from your beginnings?
For me, I am now 29 years old and considering that I started ten years ago, I think I can emphasize the illusion, the desire, the imaginary, the beautiful side above all else. Over time, I find that this decade has been a time when I learned a lot. I didn’t realize it at the time, but looking back a bit now, I think it’s the beginning of learning to relativize, to put perspective, to realize that nothing is that important, that you have to prioritize. yourself as a person
You mentioned earlier about feminism, a topic women carry as their flag. Male actors don’t have to hold roundtable discussions about the challenges of being a man in the film industry. Instead, women do. How do you feel about constantly having to defend a claim when ideally it will no longer be necessary?
I believe that equality still does not exist in any profession. Ours is no less. Regardless of the industry, women face challenges that men do not experience. I also think that Spanish cinema is in a very good period right now, because all of a sudden a lot of windows have been opened up to the directors, screenwriters and producers who have opened up a huge space for them and come with great strength. That works for the actresses, because after all, the characters are much more interesting and more feminist. However, we are in a time where inequality still exists.
For example, about the wage difference you mentioned.
Yes, the pay gap issue is a very hot topic because I’m really speaking for myself I never know where the inequality is going because money has always been a very taboo subject.
He has been involved in many projects recently, one of them was audio editing, bad decisions. How has the experience of working with voice only been like? Did you miss the image?
No, I didn’t miss him. Being able to do something different after so many audiovisual projects was really cool for me. I had a great time. No matter your physique or anything, it’s so liberating not to have to keep an eye on your image and be able to double down on your pajamas. Actually, we’re going to do a second season.
He has also been shooting movies in Greece recently. excellent story.
Yes, it is a series that will be released on Netflix this year.
And what was it like to put the drama aside and go do a romantic comedy like Sandra Bullock?
It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and I had a great time, it’s been really great. I had an incredible team, a great director Chloe Wallace, my partner Álvaro Mel too… I had a great time. My favorite genre is romantic comedies and being able to do something like that has been very liberating.
You started on boards. Now that you’ve made so many movies, sound edits… don’t you miss the theater?
Yes, I miss the theatre. And actually I think what’s happening is that when we actors get too involved in the audio-visual, all of a sudden we’re no longer considered in the theater anymore. And I got it, huh. It is true that beautiful projects do not come to me, and I would love for them to come to me. In fact, if I don’t get it, I’ll even think about arranging something for myself with my friends because I miss it so much.
Speaking of setting things up with friends, have you ever said you have an idea or project to start a production company?
No, what’s happening is that I have so many acting friends like Greta, Maca, Belén, Claudia that we’re always talking about possible projects, these are more long-term projections, things we want to do. , but nothing concrete in reality.
Regarding the challenges she faced as an actress, she commented that at some point, in order to survive, she had to distance herself emotionally on set, bond with a lot of people, the crew, and then move on to someone else. same thing again How do you manage this platoon after so many projects?
I guess that’s part of the learning I talked about earlier. It’s something I wasn’t fully aware of for ten years, but it’s something my body has learned to do in a very healthy way. When I’m on a project, I like to be very involved with the team, to be a part of the team, to meet people… I create lingering connections like a bubble, or I create such connections. then there are people who film it at the end that stays in time and stays forever. It’s survival in the sense that it’s always been that way: you share and then you have to switch families, as if to say. I learn not to worry, that everything is fine, that there are people who remain friends and people who remain colleagues, and that’s it. After all, we always meet here, there are people you don’t work with again after ten years, but you meet again after ten years. And I find it very beautiful.
Talking about future projects, he said that he would rather portray characters of this or that type, depending on the movies he watched or the books he read. You mentioned that you wanted to do something about family relationships. Are you still at this point? What can be said about family relationships that have not yet been told?
Uff, well, everything. This is something that really interests me and that I am passionate about. Every family is a world, and in every family there are thousands of movements. As a viewer, the subject of family relations interests me a lot. So as an actress, I really want to do research and delve a little deeper. Relationships between siblings as well as mother-daughter relationships are very interesting, because in the end we all get something from the mother… I’m interested in family relationships in general.
In the end, love relationships have always been the protagonist, placed in the center, and perhaps not taking into account the emotional burden that a bad relationship with a brother, for example, can also bring.
Yes, because you were born from a family, it is very interesting to me to see the roles that have developed over time and throughout life, to see how difficult it is to break the dynamics, to see when you become this way with the people who accompany you. As you get older, you understand who your parents are as individuals, see how your brother or sister grows as an individual, how you connect and how you don’t, how you relate.
Is there a book or movie you’ve read recently that you particularly liked or took note of?
Now I’m reading Annie Ernaux’s books. first time i read job, which is very short. He talks about a woman’s obsession with her ex-husband’s next girlfriend, talking about jealousy, obsession so wild and so openly.
