Director Alexander Sokurov expressed his hope that his student Kantemir Balagov will return to his work in the cinema, in an interview with the RTVI Telegram channel.

“Regret, deep regret. I hope he returns to this profession, he is very ready for it, very ready to direct, and he definitely has a special talent for it. I hope that now some of the turmoil in his soul that has befallen him will pass and he will return to his work in the cinema,” stressed Sokurov.

The director explained that he was not in contact with Balagov or other artists who left Russia.

Balagov logged in In 2017, he directed the feature film “Intimacy” as a director. The picture was screened at the Cannes Film Festival. The filmmaker received an award for him from the International Film Press Federation FIPRESCI in the Un Certain Regard program.

Balagov showed his second film “Dylda” at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019. The movie won the best director award. That same year, Russia nominated the film for an Oscar in the nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
