American director, screenwriter and producer Francis Ford Coppola has completed the shooting of his movie “Megalopolis”. A message about it appeared on the official account of the tape on Instagram (the owner of the Meta company was recognized as an extremist in Russia and was banned) (this is the only post on the page).
The story revolves around a New Yorker torn between his “classic” father and his more “progressive” lover.

Work on the “Megalopolis” took more than 40 years in total. The idea for the epic sci-fi movie came to Coppola after the release of the war drama Apocalypse Now (1979). The script for “Megalopolis” was written by the cinematographer in the early 80s, but later postponed this project for a long time to work on other films, which should allow him to independently finance the dream project (this is because, for example, horror “Dracula”, comedy ” Jack” and the legal drama “The Benefactor”).
In 2001, Coppola decided to take Megalopolis seriously, but filming was suspended indefinitely after the September 11 attacks. Due to the tragedy, nearly 30 hours of film with a view of New York, shot by Ron Fricke, the screenwriter and cameraman of the documentary “Koyaanisqatsi”, among other things, was rejected.
Work on the project resumed only in 2019. Coppola, in particular, had to sell “a substantial part of his wine empire” to meet the budget. Filming began on November 1, 2022. In January 2023, there were media reports that a “chaotic” atmosphere prevailed on the Megalopolis set after the production designers and the entire visual effects team had withdrawn from the project. Actor Adam Driver denied these reports, praising the atmosphere on Coppola’s set.
Megalopolis is expected to be released in 2024.
