French director Nicolas Philibert’s documentary film “On Adamant” won the grand prize at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival. The award ceremony took place on Saturday, February 25. Full list of winners released Online Berlinale.
Philibert’s tape describes the patients and caregivers of a psychiatric clinic standing on the banks of the Seine in the very center of Paris. According to the dpa agency, the director was surprised by the victory of his painting, as documentaries are not usually awarded the Golden Bear. He commented on the news with these words: “Are you out of your mind?”
The Silver Bear award went to 8-year-old actress Sofia Otero, who starred in the family drama 20,000 Bee Species. Otero is the youngest recipient of the award in history. Philippe Garrel won the Best Director award for The Plow. He dedicated the victory to the late director Jean-Luc Godard.
Steven Spielberg received the Golden Bear for his contribution to cinema.
