Olga Kalugina, PhD, a researcher at the Department of Cinema and Contemporary Art at the Russian State University for the Humanities (RSUH), appreciated the renaming of Edgar Degas’ painting “Russian Dancer” as “Ukrainian”. The art critic commented in an interview about the new title of the painting “Dancers in Ukrainian Dresses”, which is in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. TASS.
He called the American Museum’s decision a copyright infringement. “Renaming a work of art actually takes it out of its origin (the history of owning a work of art). He loses all connection with his past, which gives rise to a lot of speculation,” he warned.
Thus, Kalugina believes that fake authors can claim that the real picture is in their own hands, and not in the Metropolitan. He also added that Arkhip Kuindzhi, whose name is Ukrainian and who was born in Mariupol, cannot position himself that way. “At that time the concept of “Ukrainian” did not exist, one could say that he was from Little Russia, but he did not position himself as a Ukrainian in any way. We should look at Kuindzhi’s correspondence, not as some politicians want to rename him, but as he says, ”he said, describing what happened as the eradication of culture.
