Dancer and actress Margie Duncan, a close friend of Debbie Reynolds, has died at the age of 92. She has performed stunts for her co-star in movies like The Unsinkable Molly Brown, The Singing Nun, and others.
Duncan died on January 3 after a short illness at his home at Porter Ranch in Los Angeles. The family just announced his death, writes Hollywood Reporter.
Duncan danced for Reynolds in several movies.
In the musical comedy The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964), for which Reynolds received his only Oscar nomination, Duncan played the role of “It Hasn’t Fallen Again.” His action took place in the courtyard of the country house of the heroine Molly (Reynolds). It was choreographed by Peter Gennaro. During the final take, the scripted Duncan jumped onto the roof of the barn to sing the last line, and one of the planks came out from under the straw and Duncan fell to the ground. He was not injured.
In the late 1970s, when Reynolds wanted to create a rehearsal space for professional dancers and other stunt performers, he asked Duncan to set up such a center in a building on Lankershim Avenue in North Hollywood. Duncan hired Hollywood set designer Jerry Wunderlich, who was Oscar-nominated for The Exorcist and The Last Tycoon, and covered the concrete floors with a rubber sheet on which wooden floors were placed. This created a “floating floor” where the dancers were not injured.
Duncan directed DR Studios, where Michael Jackson and Madonna rehearsed, for more than three decades.
Duncan was born on September 4, 1930 in Philadelphia. Starting out as a tap dancer, she has performed at Catholic schools and the prestigious Academy of Music in her hometown. After graduating from a Catholic school, Duncan moved to New York to work as a professional dancer, where her stellar career began.
