Malinche’s dream (Gonzalo Suárez, 2019)
This 40-minute film project proposes a poetic revision, among other works by Gonzalo Suárez, such as: Don Juan is in hell, of the uncertain encounter between (because deadly and wonderful) Cortes and Moctezuma and the mysterious presence of Malinche as the mediator between the two worlds.
Although made entirely by drawings, Malinche’s dream not an animated movie. While the film shows a series of static drawings in which the director moves the camera using zoom and reframing details, different voice-overs are performed by the actors as well. Carmelo Gómez or Marian Álvarez, They tell us the story written by Gonzalo Suárez.
In the words of Auladell, Malinche’s dream this “As a descent into the Hades of history, here the narrator meets the shadows of the characters that they are involved in an event as fascinating and still mysterious as the conquest of Mexico; and these shadows are forever repeating the same gesture, the same speech, like an introverted echo of an epic in which they were trapped or condemned, of a fate in which they were hopelessly doomed, of actors who are constantly forced to represent the work. . what made them famous”.
Malinche’s dream It premiered at the Prado Museum on February 25, 2019.
Wings of Darkness (Gonzalo Suárez, 2021)
inspired by the novel wings of darkness translator and writer Anne-Hélene Suárez Girard, this short film takes us to the origins of day and night, the Chinese myth of suns that rebelled against the established order, and the great flight of beings that draw and transform darkness. as with Malinche’s dream, we are not dealing with a short animation. illusion of movement sequential drawings are made static by static drawings Scanned by the director’s camera. Auladell’s illustrations wings of darkness Combine analog and digital technology. The works shown in this room are the result of mixed technique, quality reproductions. giclee.
About the creation process wings of darkness, Auladell argues, this isn’t far from what he usually does when faced with an editorial project: “It’s like I’m Gonzalo’s camera, but it’s a very special camera. The difference from what they had done before was the scale, the essence of the project”.
Regarding working with the director, Auladell adds: “It’s not easy or difficult, it’s the complexity of entering the poetic world he offers, and knowing that you’re part of a team and not all responsibility for it. is mine.” and some things needed to be discussed. In any case, I always felt very close, very comfortable with the poetic world he developed.”.
Potemkin (Red Fox Books, 2018)
On June 27, 1905, The battleship of the Russian fleet Potemkin rebelled because of the deplorable working conditions in which they find themselves. Twenty years later, the Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein He mythologized the event by directing the film, which will become one of the most studied masterpieces in the History of Cinema in Schools, Potemkin battleship (1925).
Almost a century later, in 2018, Auladell published the comic. Potemkin It was built by the publishing house Libros del Zorro Rojo. “Celebrating the anniversary of an outstanding work of art (The Battleship Potemkin) was about paying homage. So I focused on highlighting and singing about Eisenstein’s achievements: metaphors, fiction, pacing, allegories, similes… putting it all together to work as a comic.
The illustrator, “bewitched Eisenstein resource distribution, the extraordinary ability to craft the revolutionary epic, the emotional repertoire of noble ideals, the ability to write a fable about a real event and turn it into a full story, stripping it of the least heroic details and the most prosaic, dirty or vulgar events. vitality, humanity, anger and plastic beauty, a brilliant work, a beautiful lie, a masterpiece. What impressed me the most was certainly not the flying of the red flag loaded with promises, but the portrayal of the crude and despised face of the people, who were aware that the dignity, nobility and immense courage of all these people would soon be destroyed. it would be wasted, corrupted, betrayed.”
The exhibition is accompanied by a projection of the entire Eisenstein film to appreciate the parallelism between both works. As Auladell explained, the publisher wanted to pay homage to the film, for which its universe, atmosphere, and even its most iconic frames were quite recognizable. despite the similarities between frames Pages of Eisenstein and Auladell, resounding and spontaneous beats to your cousin The illustrator’s image appears as if it were a warship. an original and paradoxically contemporary work.
