Interview with actor Alexei Rozin about “The Right to Freedom”, sects and the series “Woland” Actor Alexei Rozin spoke about his role in the series “The Right to Freedom” 24.11.2022, 20:41

– Alexey, tell us how the story began with the TV series “The Right to Freedom”. Is it easy for you to generally accept making your first movies?

– They sent me an invitation to audition, I came and there was someone I knew – director Artem Dubra. It seems that the writers were convinced by my tests and I was invited to act in the movie. I readily agree to pull outs because debuting is such an interesting experience. Of course, I read the script first, talk to the writers and only then make a decision.

— Do you have a prototype of your character, the founder of the sect?

– My character in “The Right to Freedom” is more of a collective image. But I’m sure there are such people. Such native tyrants do not necessarily have a sect, they can be people of quite peaceful professions.

How was your character search? Did you play it as it was written in the script or did you add something on your own?

— I’m sure the actor adds something of himself to every character he plays, because that’s the value of acting.

— Sectarian problem. Do you think this topic remained in the 90s – or did it go nowhere and was simply wiped out by information noise and other modern problems?

“I haven’t thought about it in detail, but I think sects have always existed and will always exist because people are looking for themselves and their teachers, looking for peace, looking for answers to questions they can’t answer themselves. In moments of violent turmoil in society, the need to be held by one’s hand and taken to where it is good only intensifies. In the 90s, of course, there was a Klondike – people were talking from all sides, including on television. Now even though everything seems to have solidified with such methods of spreading information, people still manage to get into cults and scams. As they say, “the sucker is not a mammoth – he will not die.”

– Maybe you had to help people who fell into sects? Probably, every person thinks that he will definitely not find himself in such a situation …

— No, I didn’t have to. And I don’t even know these people personally. While it’s not really worth cursing – we don’t know where trouble will catch us, whether we have the wit and cunning to recognize danger. I hope God will save me from this.

In “The Right to Be Free,” characters often help others for some personal reason. Do you believe in pure altruism – or do you need a reason to help, some kind of trauma, a sense of guilt?

– Pure altruism of course exists – at least that’s what I want to believe. If you start to understand though, you can see that he too has his reasons. On the other hand, absolutely anything can be proven today. Modern psychology tells us many things that we did not think about before – for example, all our problems and achievements depend on the baggage that a person received in early childhood. Perhaps altruism is somehow connected with this, and if you start digging, you can identify the reasons why a person selflessly helps. Another question is whether it is necessary to make this logical connection if a person is ready to help, protect and save without demanding anything in return.

– Are you a volunteer? Maybe go somewhere with your students?

“I don’t volunteer until I get my hands on it. But, for example, there is such a person – Andrey Popov. He has a big program, he even has a series called “Man of the World”. In this context, various festivals and promotions are organized. He once set up a laboratory where children with various serious illnesses and disabilities wrote dramaturgical applications and submitted them to the competition. About 10 people from all over the country were selected and brought to Sochi – this was before the Olympics. And professional playwrights who worked with them on dramaturgy for a week came in, too. The children wrote their short plays and then I met the actors and artists, including myself. In three days we all had a great performance, we showed it at the Winter Theater in Sochi, and then we staged a show in Moscow. It was an incredible experience for me.

– You recently acted as Azazello in the movie “Woland”. What is the fate of the project? Will it come out?

– I really hope the movie will be released, but I don’t know anything about it. I’m equally looking forward to the movie, because I think it’s important that movies like this are released on time, not five years after they were made.

– It so happened that the film adaptations and productions of The Master and Margarita are accompanied by evil. didn’t you have

– To be honest, I thought nervously too, but everything went well, the shooting went well. Woland is a great job, a lot of talented people worked on the film, a lot of effort was put into it. Of course, the opposite was done – for example, the cinematographer caught the coronavirus and remotely controlled the shot with a zoom. But it’s hard to call it nonsense.

– In one of the interviews, you said that you noticed how short-thinking affects students. Do you feel that something important is lost with the impossibility of concentration? Or vice versa – have a new one?

– First, of course, something new appears on the principle of “now so”. I think clip thinking is neither good nor bad, as it is. The generation has changed consciousness, the way it transmits and processes information has changed. On the other hand, acting department students and future actors need to be able to concentrate and keep their attention on an object for a long time because this is an important professional skill. In general, all of us – both old and young – are included in the general flow of information, live by its rules and, accordingly, perceive information faster than 20-30 years ago. But we must not forget that every profession has its own characteristics, and one of the features of the art of acting is to draw your attention and the attention of the audience to something deeper.

“Teaching is always a mutually beneficial process. What have your students taught you?

– Communication with students teaches me tolerance and humility – you must be prepared for the fact that not everything you give will be accepted and will not receive attention, but you have to put up with it. Also, communicating with young people gives me the opportunity to stay in a fresh context, understand the language that young people speak, introduce me to very new ways of transmitting and receiving information. In a word, it is extremely useful.

The final episodes of the drama series “Right to Freedom”, one of the roles in which the founder of the sect is played by the popular actor Alexei Rozin, have been broadcast in the Wink online cinema. In an interview with socialbites.ca, the artist talked about the work in the project, the importance of volunteering and the fate of the Woland movie.
