The Deacorde agency is turning 20 and has planned a concert with the Tenerife musician to celebrate it; Javier Ruibal, “a reference from my beginnings, someone unique in the Spanish music scene” and Jaime Anglada. Appointment is at Trui Teatre this Thursday at 21:00.
I kicked him out of the studio. What are you preparing?
A future project, quite large, but still in a very embryonic state. Now I’m with the producer, testing things, with great motivation and enthusiasm.
What unites him with Javier Ruibal and Jaime Anglada, where he will sing happy birthday to Deacorde, an agency of Majorca, tomorrow at the Trui Teatre?
We have never met Anglada, I do not know him personally. A Xavier Ruibal I have been united by many things and over many years. When I lived in the Canary Islands, before settling in Madrid, Ruibal was already a reference, always someone I loved dearly. I had the opportunity to meet him back then, 30 yearsand since then we have met countless times, recorded together and always had each other. I will meet him for the second time by chance this year, the first was with Uxía in Galicia during the summer. Coming from flamenco, from an Arab origin, Ruibal’s originality seduces me; Besides, he plays the guitar and sings wonderfully. He is unique in the Spanish music scene.
Deacorde started out as an organizer concertsfirst time to the island was Ruibal himself, Drexler or Ismail Serrano. What memories do you have from your first concert?
My first concert was at the Christmas dinner of a very important cultural association in my country, at the Canary Folk Culture Centre. Sabandenos and Taburientetwo of the most important bands of folk music. all intellectuals Canary Islands I agglutinated there and went and sang, just two songs, but that was my presentation. This was the beginning, because after that performance I started working with them and they started to motivate me. I was 16 years old.
Since then, he has not stopped touring the world and releasing albums, more than twenty in total. What kind of relationship did you have with the industry?
Neither good nor bad. I have nothing bad to say. The industry is the way we show our business and I have had a very good relationship with the industry. It is true that there is always a point where industry and art collide, because industry has some goals and the artist has other goals. The most important thing for them is the economic results, same for me, but the artistic ones are more important. There may be a point of friction at this point, but on the other hand, we need each other. You need to reach the common denominator. I have been in a multinational company for many years, in recent years I have worked more freely, reaching certain agreements, especially distribution, but nevertheless, when I worked with the industry, I always had the freedom to do what I wanted to do. I have never felt compelled to do anything other than what I wanted. We got along well.
Balance is a term that describes him as a composer.
I always try to find a balance between lyrics and music. I’m not interested in songs that have great music and bad lyrics, and vice versa. I try to be as sincere and honest as possible when discussing any topic, I tell things from a strange point of view that I feel comfortable with, and I try not to repeat myself, which is the hardest part.
this gender violence, historical memory and migration They are the pillars of his songbook. Do you feel like we’re going backwards in these fields?
Yes, back and forth. I feel we’re getting on, that’s important anyway. In all three issues, in historical memory, a lot of progress has been made on gender violence. At the moment, I feel there is a political tendency, especially on the right and the far right, to deny three issues: the existence of machismo, the need to re-establish the memory, and the need to see the enemy number 1 that causes all the problems in the immigrant. in our society. If that goes up, bad. But progress has been made, perhaps much less than it should have been, but fortunately progress is being made.
after his concert Palm He’s going to Las Vegas to attend the premiere. latin grammy, competed as a finalist. Are you comfortable on red carpets?
It’s the fourth time I’ve been nominated and it’s my first time going. It’s not my favorite thing, but I think it’s important to be there sometime, to meet artists you haven’t seen for years, it’s nice to be there, both to share and to be seen. grammy especially having a projection Latin America.
She attends the Grammys with ‘El viaje’. What is your dream trip?
There isn’t just one, there are many. Once I decided to embark on a journey of dedication to music, a journey full of uncertainty, and finally I went much further than I had ever imagined. Life is a journey, a journey of things dreamed, thought, dreamed, desired, longed for and good, some achieved and others not. You have to be there, your mind is traveling.
