Bulgaria offers to supply electricity to Azerbaijan in exchange for natural gas

While Bulgaria is discussing its supply in exchange for electricity, it will increase its gas supply from Azerbaijan to 2 billion cubic meters per year. In an interview with Bulgarian national television about this declaration Minister of Economy and Industry of the country’s technical government, Nikola Stoyanov, after their meeting in Baku.

“As a traditional partner, they have offered to provide us with an additional share of gas from the future expansion of the southern gas corridor. This means that on the basis of a long-term agreement with Azerbaijan, we can buy 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year, which will meet about 60 percent of our needs,” he said.

According to him, the issue of providing gas quantities in exchange for electricity is also discussed. These negotiations can take about five months. At the same time, from October 1, when the construction of the Bulgarian-Greek interconnector is completed and put into operation, Bulgaria will already start receiving 1 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

He added that now experts from the Ministry of Energy will continue negotiations with Azerbaijan on price, quantity, gas supply conditions and other technical parameters. At the same time, the volume of fuel supplied can grow in a few years.
