Bloomberg: Sakhalin Energy refuses to supply gas to Asia due to payment problems

Sakhalin Energy, the new operator of the Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project, has refused to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to at least one Asian buyer. About informs Bloomberg cites.

On August 19, the property of Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd, the former operator of the project, was transferred to the state. After that, customers were offered to enter into new agreements for the supply of LNG by paying through Gazprombank. But according to the traders, not all counterparties agreed to the new conditions and refused to sign the revised contracts. Among them was one of the Asian buyers of Russian gas.

Buyers are currently discussing documents with lawyers and reviewing the details of the deals. After the analysis, they will make the final decision – whether to transact with the new establishment, whether to interact with the Russian bank, writes Bloomberg.

Potential supply disruptions will affect consumers in Japan, including power cuts for the upcoming winter heating season. Due to the supply of Russian gas, the country is the largest buyer of Sakhalin fuel, meeting about 9% of its energy needs.
