EC: No sanction violations in accepting Russian payments by banks for Kaliningrad transit

European Commission representative Ariana Podesta said that the operations of commercial banks to pay for rail transport from Lithuania to Kaliningrad do not violate the EU sanctions regime against Russia in relation to events in Ukraine. According to him, EU sanctions measures limit export and import payments to natural and legal persons from the list of sanctions. In case Kaliningrad transit payments are not accepted, the decision was made by a particular bank based on the credit institution’s risk perception and not as a requirement of EU sanctions.
