RUSAL was among the leaders in environmental protection 14:51

Experts participating in the study “Environmental activities of Russian industrial enterprises” of the Center for Social Design “Platform” (CSP) described the modernization of the Krasnoyarsk aluminum smelter of the Rusal company as one of the most important environmental projects of Russian companies. The authors of the study included Rusal in the group of companies that are leaders in terms of the level of participation in environmental policy: such companies are not limited to complying with legal requirements, but also set trends in the field of environmental protection and participate in the formation of the environmental agenda of all Russia.

Experts noted that after the modernization of the Rusal plant, hydrogen fluoride emissions will be reduced by 2/3, and tar substance and benzopyrene emissions into the atmosphere will also be eliminated.

According to Sergei Shakhmatov, co-chairman of the Russian political party Greens, Rusal is implementing a multi-year modernization program.

“The old one produced significant amounts of pollutants from benzopyrene, which is class one hazard. Two-stage gas cleaning has now been introduced and wet cleaning has been added. “Emissions have decreased significantly,” he said.

Within the scope of the work, a total of nearly 120 main and auxiliary production facilities and engineering and transportation infrastructure will be built and reconstructed.

In addition to the reconstruction of the plant, the authors of the study also noted the modernization of the Bogoslovsky Rusal aluminum plant, where a new cyclone-vortex calcining furnace was commissioned. In this way, natural gas consumption will decrease by 30 percent and emissions into the atmosphere will decrease by 10 times.

The authors of the study also noted Rusal’s projects in the field of landscaping and volunteer activities, including the EcoGeneration expedition, the River Day eco-action and others. Additionally, as part of the Green Wave, the Ural and Bogoslovsky aluminum smelters and the North Ural bauxite mine planted approximately 400 saplings in 2023.

Separately, experts noted the Rusal project to monitor biodiversity in the system of specially protected natural areas of the Altai-Sayan ecoregion.

“The implementation of projects in protected areas and the use of bioindicators does not guarantee immediate or clearly positive results. “But the implementation of such initiatives demonstrates the proactive position of companies in the field of environmental responsibility,” experts added.

The study showed that the current state of the environment in Russia is assessed by society as “neutral” (6.3 out of 10), with a slight shift to the positive zone. In addition, young participants between the ages of 18-34 gave the environment a score of 4 out of 10, while 37% of the participants stated that the situation in their region had worsened in the last 5 years.
