Discounts on sweet New Year’s gifts for children in Russian stores have already reached 10-20%, and by January 20 this rate may reach 50%. This forecast was given to socialbites.ca by Candidate of Economic Sciences Igor Balynin, Associate Professor of the Department of Public Finance at the Financial University of the Government of the Russian Federation.
“It’s time to start looking at the prices of sweet gifts for kids. Retail chains have already started offering discounts. This is because most of the sets cannot be sold during the New Year holiday and will break down before the next New Year. While this is 10-20 percent, discounts can reach 50 percent as of the second ten days of January. But it is also important to pay attention to the composition of gift sets (sometimes the stated discounts are fictitious: in fact, they contain candies whose prices are initially lower),” noted the economist.
He added that it is important to consider the expiration date: Sugar is a product with a long shelf life, but it may have been made a long time ago. According to Balynin, sometimes collectors of children’s sets put sweets with an expiration date.
According to the analytical agency EADaily, as of December 2024, the average price of a gift weighing 500-600 grams is about 791 rubles, while the cost of sets weighing 800-1000 grams is on average 1300 rubles. Prices for New Year’s sweet gifts for children in the Detsky Mir online store start from 30 rubles and reach 2992 rubles, depending on the content and brand.
