The newspaper writes that Pavel Shapkin, Chairman of the National Union for the Protection of Consumer Rights, called on the authorities to strengthen control over manufacturers and sellers of cosmetics “News”.
The letter was sent to Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov and the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Anton Alikhanov. The message includes reasons why urgent action is needed.
Shapkin notes that, first of all, 95 percent of cosmetic products contain information in Latin, making it difficult for consumers to understand. Secondly, in most cases the composition of the components is written in an unreadable font. He also noted that one-third of product assortments in retail chains are sold without any information about the composition.
“The number of consumer complaints about cosmetic products is increasing. In the letter, the most common side effects of cosmetics are: irritation, allergies and skin diseases.
As one of the measures to regulate the cosmetics market, Shapkin proposes an accelerated introduction of product labeling. Currently, cosmetics labeling is in an experimental stage. It will last until February 28, 2025. From now on, the process is planned to be implemented gradually over 2.5 years.
