The court in the city of Braunschweig (federal state of Lower Saxony) has begun considering the case in the “diesel scandal” case against the former chairman of German carmaker Volkswagen, Martin Winterkorn. The agency reports DPA.
Braunschweig prosecutors are charging the carmaker’s former chairman with fraud, perjury and market manipulation. According to the investigation, Winterkorn knew that Volkswagen had updated vehicle software in 2014 at a cost of tens of millions of euros and that this had not solved the emissions problem. The prosecutor’s office said it was “necessary to conceal the real reason for the inflated emissions” of diesel vehicles.
The former Volkswagen chairman also denies any wrongdoing. His lawyer, Felix Derr, said Winterkorn “vehemently denies the allegations against him.” The defense argued that Winterkorn’s role as chairman of the automaker’s board of directors during the years when the scandal broke out did not make him guilty.
